Bolulla ’23/’24

17th Dec – Flew from Teesside again which was chill.

Stayed here: https://www.airbnb.co.uk/users/show/6194155

Found out you can track the plane’s flight path, speed and altitude on Outdoor Active

18th Dec – Castell de Garx from the village to test Jenny’s knee on rough terrain.

Castell de Garx looking over to the Bernia Ridge
Nice pad we passed

19th Dec – Happy Birthday Mummy, here’s some house pics for you, have a nice day : )

We live in the blue one (2nd one in)
View from roof terrace of the Bernia Ridge
The neighbours
Locals killing it on the amazing tarmac
Castell de Castells (the castle of castles impressive but a tad arrogant)
Contemplating whether our selection of cold meats will see us to the end of the seige
Exiting the Penya de Castellets ridge

20th Dec – Climbing with Adele, Jim & Dave McKenna at Alkalali. Jenny found her knee was ok to climb 5+. Tried her knee at the wall last week and that was a no, so we didn’t bring ropes etc but she has been getting stronger with the walking on rough terrain. Anyway forgot to take pics, soz. Took some of the locale:

Bell tower informs we slept in past 06:30
Renault 6 and the bar up the street

21th Dec – Jenny walked round the Bernia Ridge, i ran to the summit then round it to meet her the other side of the tunnel for lunch. Then a drink in the square and a paddle in the sea at Altea.

Gormless summit selfie
20°C in the 20° scree
Knee sea therapy

22nd Dec – walked from the house over to the Fonts d’Algar then up the Rio d’Algar to Penya Pollastra.

Euro rural graff often better than our urban offerings
Rare sight in limestone country – flowing surface water
Moonrise over Pas des Bandolers at head of Rio d’Algar

23rd Dec – climbing Font d’Axia with Adele, Jim and Kevin

24th Dec – 15km ‘easy walk’ approximately half of which was spiky bushwhacking

Then Santa happened by
…but didn’t stop which i guess means something
..and the band played Feliz Navidad

Christmas Day – beach for a swim

Red shows a line we climbed last year

Boxing Day – bought rope and draws and hit Guadal Valley next to old & young Germans.

Petzl Connect Adjust which I’ve wanted for a while – makes re-threading for the lower-off so much easier

27th Dec – climbing Garx, bit annoying – miserable sniffing woman, rockfall + belayers without helmets, hungry perros & too busy.

Spanked on the 6a as kept trying direct instead of creeping up the RH edge as egged on by locals who made me nearly fall off when they called me una maquina (a machine)

28th Dec – Cresta del Castellets followed by impromptu Menu del Dias in Confrides.

The ridge is in the background – incidentally this Peugot 208 has been a really nice drive, so glad we swapped it out for the battered (every panel) long low Kia Ceed, was a bit of a hassle at the hire car desk when all you want to do is drive away and start your holiday (Kia horrible Ceed estate thingy was apparently same class as the VW T Roc)
Climbing above Serpis the first company to market anchovy stuffed Olives in Spain
Walk-off ridge finish
One of the best meals we’ve had in Spain Herbero = herbalist which was like the Italian Genepi
…erm

29th Dec – Walk 30 Bolulla Circuit of Raco Roig – then menu del dias in the bar with some people-watching and the parrot whistling for attention under the cover.

Arc de Atancos limestone arch
Well built into the terrace wall
Bigger than it looks inside
.. the path climbs a gentle slope and after a flat section the walk becomes instantly and unexpectedly spectacular

30th Dec – Lazy day: walked over to Font de something then drove up for a wander around Tarbena and frequented 3 bars, two of which occupied by: Annoying people A) had a yapping dog under the table that had trained the owners to attend to 1 in 5 yaps; Annoying people B had a video converstion and though the video was transmitted by the phone network, they thought it necessary to shout the audio direct to Holland. The bar full of Spanish people in the square was throbbing and fun. We heard castanets and hovered outside where the dancing and singing eminated from but when I poked my nose through the flyscreen it turned out to be someone’s house.

Tarbena
View across to Bolulla Castle (Garx where we walked up to on first day)

New Year’s Eve – Sierra de Toix sport crag with Kevin & Tracey

Also Horst IV & Jan IV at Sierra de Toix

New Year’s Day – Alcolali sport crag with Kevin & Tracey

Recessed Slab & Crack 6a
Kev & Tray

02 Jan – Walk 45 Pla de la Casa then menu del dias at Can Pinet in Tarbena

Impressive big fluffy thistley things
Impressive big sharp limestoney things
Water stop before summit approach
Pla de la Casa summit
..where we had lunch – clear line on distant hills of wild-fire damage 2020 (large area of barren land beyond treeline) – also we could see Majorca and Ibiza from here
Check their food: https://www.facebook.com/CanPinet

03 Jan – climbing Ambolo with Kevin & Tracey- smashed a few off then kicked back on the rocks. Jenny & I hit Melatoni on way home.

Up early enough for sunrise

Defos hook up with Kevin & Tracey back in uk, had a blast with them last few days. ©️ Kev

05 Jan – Walk 17 Carrascal de Parcent then café on Coll de Rates to listen to people bleating that the music was too loud (and he always asks them to turn it down everywhere we go), she needed a cardie to keep the chill breeze off her kidneys, Benidorm is like a zoo and they’re all from up North (in England) aren’t they and the wild boar casserole is very rich, very; rich.

View over Parcent
Return down Mozarabuc trail used to export raisins to the uk from Tarbena before the road was built
Village hall in Parcent serving food
Calamar planche was quite challenging (this is half-way through)

05 Jan – Walk 46 Quatretondeta to Rectingle 1,360m & Penta Creus 1,353m. Tapas in the little bar in town – Comidas Bar Casa Cañares – great, only locals (like us) and local food.

The wife of senior Tomás passed away, but they don’t let him bury her, because the family of the deceased wants to repatriate the body to Paris. So Tomás steals the corpse to be able to bury it in Quatretondeta, a little village in the region of Alicante, as his wife had wanted.
View up to where we walked from the streets of Quatretondeta
Blessed are the cats and the babby J needs a shave
Shoe for scale
Saw booted eagle climbing and stooping
Forgot to mention, very windy today and nitheringly cold at times
Limestone pinnacles
I know it looks posed but that’s actually how i walk
Nice knobs i thought
Erbero after all the other courses in Comidas Bar Casa Cañares
..erm the toilets
Nice light on the way home – also it had rained while we were in the bar

06 Jan – coffee in bar in Tarbena then coffee in another bar in Tarbena, then Coll de Rates via ferrata; then a short cut around Penya Talai which wasn’t short and had to abort due to unnecessary gnarl (basically loose, steep unprotectable scrambling with no certainty of it going and no certainty it was reversible). Then Can Pinet for dinner.

No ferrata kit (actually prefer sport stylie anyway)
Always wear a helmet in case someone drives off the cliff you’re climbing
Got as far as spot height 692 from the yellow hairpin which took about an hour and a half there and back – doesn’t look far but steep gravelly spiky bushwhack in the shade was more fun than we signed up for
..erm is that safe?

Fly home tomorrow at 07:00.

Mummy came to pick us up from the airport but took a wrong turn and ended up at Fire Rescue School – then found us, thank you mummy
Welcome home run on the moors

      1. Of course. Looking forward to the updates. Weather looks amazing and guessing Jen’s leg is holding up well with the heights you’ve gained? x
